Abdominal mesothelioma isn’t the most common form of mesothelioma. It is a very rare form of mesothelioma, because asbestos fibers must be ingested in most cases for it to result in abdominal mesothelioma. As the fibers of the harmful particle asbestos are released into the air, people who have direct and continuous contact with the area will eventually swallow enough fibers, and in return, receive cancer. Like peritoneal mesothelioma, abdominal mesothelioma affects the area around the abdomen. The lining of the abdomen region which covers many organs of the human body is affected as a result of the asbestos. Symptoms of this type of mesothelioma may include: swelling and pain in the abdominal area, bowel obstruction, weight loss and weight fluctuation, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue and feeling weak. Symptoms may worsen depending on the cancer, and whether it grows or not. Severe pain may result if the cancer grows, or other complications occur. Treatment for abdominal mesothelioma is similar to the treatments used for all the other cases of mesothelioma. The patient can either undergo surgical procedure, radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination of several different types of treatments. Usually, the method of treatment prescribed and suggested to the patient depends on how serious the situation is, and how severe the cancer has become at the time of diagnosis. When the doctor diagnoses a patient with abdominal mesothelioma, he/she does not have much more time to live, probably a few months, up to 12 months. If treatment is not successful within that time range, the result may be fatal.
